IBM, Five Other Firms Unveil 22nm SRAM Chip
August 22, 2008
IBM recently announced that the company and five other partners have developed a working SRAM (Static Random Access Memory), claimed to be the first SRAM chip utilizing the 22nm technology and the world's smallest so far, Nikkei Electronic Asia reported on August 19. Aside from IBM, participants in this development project include AMD, Freescale, STMicroelectronics, Toshiba, and the CNSE (College of Nanoscale Science & & Engineering).

Outpacing the current generation of 32nm products, the chip -which was developed at IBM's 300mm fab in Albany, New York - is envisaged as the first step towards the development of a 22nm microprocessor. IBM, however, did not reveal a definite time frame for 22nm microprocessor development.
